Escaping the Mommy Wars: Homeschool Edition
I had seen my fair share of mommy wars in baby groups such as “due date clubs”, cloth diapering, babywearing etc. It sometimes felt like ANY parenting topic could turn into a war. As
As my children grow and I started to drift away from the baby groups I thought that I had finally escaped… guess again.
I have now discovered the homeschooling mommy wars. I was blessed to have lived in blissful ignorance during my first year of homeschooling. During that time I was only in 2 homeschooling groups and they were small and pretty quiet. As time has progressed I have joined more groups, with more members and more information. I have learned a lot from those groups but I have learned that some mothers don’t stop judging just because their child outgrew the sandbox.
“If you don’t use the curriculum I use you are doing it wrong”, “you are not homeschooling enough hours in the day”, “you are ruining your child if you unschool and don’t give them any structure”, “there isn’t enough good in your school”, and the list goes on.
Seriously people, parenting is hard enough to be throwing stones. No wonder some of these mothers complain about always being so tired, they spend so much time judging other mothers and making them feel horrible that they could have spent resting or pursuing other hobbies. Nobody is perfect, we are all learning and there is not one size fits all way to parent and homeschool. Some need to actually open the Bible that they are thumping with; those are the ones that piss me off the most.
So after clicking “unjoin” in some of those groups, my life is a bit more peaceful but I feel that I’ll never regain the innocence lost. We grow and learn and move on.
