Recovering Insomniac
One of the reasons why I don’t get to post as much as I would like, is the fact that I have been able to kick insomnia’s butt and instead of staying up writing I am actually getting some Z’s. A few weeks ago I would drag myself to bed sometime at around midnight; not because I was tired, but rather because I knew that it was getting late and kids are not forgiving in the morning and would deny all snoozing requests so I needed to squeeze as many Z’s as I could. I would toss and turn for almost an hour and then have crappy sleep.
I spend the time from the boy’s bedtime until then either reading on my Kindle or doing work on the computer until I learned that those activities were the reason to blame for my restlessness. While I don’t like increasing my risk of cancer, there was no way that I was going to achieve screen free time before bed so instead I found the perfect solution within the circumstances. Introducing the Blue Light Filter.
This is a free program that I installed on my computer and an equivalent app on my tablet that dims the screen slightly and blocks the blue light that was interrupting my serotonin flow. I have only been using it for a couple of weeks but the results were immediate and I am actually feeling sleepy and going to bed earlier. According to my Fitbit I’ve gone from 45 minutes to 1+ hours of tossing and turning before sleeping to falling asleep in less than 15 minutes.
