How I know that my 3 year old reads at a 2nd grade level
Somebody asked (and I forgot who it was) how did I know that Shammy could read to a second grade level and how could they measure their child’s reading skill.
An easy way to tell is by looking at the level of the book that your child can read independently, it’s usually in the back of the book near the price and looks something like this RL 2.2 (this means it’s 2nd month of second grade reading level).
I personally used the assessments on this link to measure Shammy’s reading skill.
How did Shammy get to read so proficiently at such a young age? A big influence was my efforts at instilling a love of books. He has a very extensive library and he sees me reading every day (I read an average of 1 book per day). But the think that helped his reading skills go off the charts for his age was homeschooling and I give special credit to the ABC Mouse program. It has been well worth the investment and you can get 1 month free through this link.
